Introduzione
Kirk Fanelly vive e lavora nella sua città natale, Charlotte, North Carolina (USA). Si è laureato in Arti Visive alla Brown University, dividendo gli anni universitari tra Brown e la vicina RISD, dove ha seguito corsi nei dipartimenti di pittura, incisione e illustrazione.
Le opere di Fanelly sono state esposte in mostre personali e collettive negli Stati Uniti orientali, tra cui le Van Every/Smith Galleries del Davidson College, il Turchin Center for the Visual Arts della Appalachian State University, la Rutledge Gallery della Winthrop University (Rock Hill, SC), Artspace (Richmond, VA), il Weatherspoon Art Museum (Greensboro, NC) e il Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (Winston-Salem, NC). La sua mostra personale del 2026 al Mint Museum (Charlotte, NC) ha presentato una selezione di opere degli ultimi venticinque anni. Le sue opere fanno parte di collezioni pubbliche e private a livello internazionale.
Tra borse di studio e riconoscimenti figurano una North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship, una Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Fellowship e una Yale Summer School of Music & Art at Norfolk Fellowship.
Dichiarazione d'artista
L'accento e i materiali del mio lavoro sono cambiati nell'ultimo decennio: quelli che un tempo erano ruoli secondari — la natura e la carta ritagliata — sono passati in primo piano. Nei miei primi dipinti narrativi mi interessavano soprattutto la goffaggine e la vulnerabilità delle persone rispetto alla nostra psicogeografia: gli ambienti architettonici, i costumi e i miti dei sobborghi, le dinamiche sessuali e le narrazioni inquietanti che si intuiscono a porte chiuse.
Negli ultimi anni il mio lavoro ha trovato più senso nei materiali e nella contemplazione del mondo naturale nel suo insieme che negli incontri con l'assurdità umana, che di questi tempi non scarseggia. Il mio approccio attuale mi sembra sempre più ampio e sereno. Il processo della carta ritagliata mi fa riscoprire il mio legame con la scienza e la natura, e trovare gioia nell'osservazione profonda.
