Introduction

Kirk Fanelly vit et travaille dans sa ville natale, Charlotte, en Caroline du Nord (États-Unis). Il a obtenu un Bachelor of Arts (BA) en arts visuels à l'université Brown, partageant ses années d'études entre Brown et la RISD voisine, où il a suivi des cours dans les départements de peinture, de gravure et d'illustration.

Le travail de Fanelly a été présenté dans des expositions personnelles et collectives dans l'est des États-Unis, notamment aux Van Every/Smith Galleries du Davidson College, au Turchin Center for the Visual Arts de l'Appalachian State University, à la Rutledge Gallery de la Winthrop University (Rock Hill, Caroline du Sud), à Artspace (Richmond, Virginie), au Weatherspoon Art Museum (Greensboro, Caroline du Nord) et au Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (Winston-Salem, Caroline du Nord). Son exposition personnelle de 2026 au Mint Museum (Charlotte) présentait une sélection d'œuvres des vingt-cinq dernières années. Ses œuvres figurent dans des collections publiques et privées à travers le monde.

Il a notamment reçu une bourse du North Carolina Arts Council, une bourse de la Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation et une bourse de la Yale Summer School of Music & Art at Norfolk.

Démarche artistique

L'accent et les matériaux de mon travail ont changé au cours de la dernière décennie : ce qui tenait autrefois des seconds rôles — la nature et le papier découpé — est passé au premier plan. Dans mes peintures narratives antérieures, je m'intéressais surtout à la maladresse et à la vulnérabilité des gens face à notre psychogéographie : les environnements architecturaux, les mœurs et les mythes des banlieues pavillonnaires, les dynamiques sexuelles et les récits inquiétants qui se devinent derrière les portes closes.

Ces dernières années, mon travail a trouvé davantage de sens dans les matériaux et dans la contemplation du monde naturel au sens large que dans la rencontre avec l'absurdité humaine — qui ne manque pourtant pas ces temps-ci. Mon approche actuelle me semble de plus en plus ouverte et apaisante. Le travail du papier découpé me fait redécouvrir mon lien avec la science et la nature, et trouver de la joie dans l'observation attentive.
