Introducción
Kirk Fanelly vive y trabaja en su ciudad natal, Charlotte, Carolina del Norte (EE. UU.). Se graduó en Artes Visuales de Brown University, repartiendo sus años universitarios entre Brown y la vecina RISD, donde cursó materias en los departamentos de pintura, grabado e ilustración.
La obra de Fanelly se ha presentado en exposiciones individuales y colectivas en el este de Estados Unidos, entre ellas las galerías Van Every/Smith de Davidson College, el Turchin Center for the Visual Arts de Appalachian State University, la Rutledge Gallery de Winthrop University (Rock Hill, SC), Artspace (Richmond, VA), el Weatherspoon Art Museum (Greensboro, NC) y el Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (Winston-Salem, NC). Su exposición individual de 2026 en el Mint Museum (Charlotte, NC) presentó una selección de obra de los últimos veinticinco años. Su trabajo forma parte de colecciones públicas y privadas a nivel internacional.
Entre sus becas y reconocimientos se cuentan una North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship, una Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Fellowship y una Yale Summer School of Music & Art at Norfolk Fellowship.
Declaración
El énfasis y los materiales de mi obra han cambiado en la última década: lo que antes eran papeles secundarios —la naturaleza y el papel recortado— pasaron a ser protagonistas. En mis primeras pinturas narrativas me interesaban sobre todo la torpeza y la vulnerabilidad de las personas frente a nuestra psicogeografía: los entornos arquitectónicos, las costumbres y los mitos suburbanos, las dinámicas sexuales y las narrativas inquietantes que se insinúan a puerta cerrada.
En los últimos años, mi obra ha encontrado más sentido en los materiales y en la contemplación del mundo natural en su conjunto que en los encuentros con el absurdo humano, del que no falta oferta en estos días. Mi enfoque actual se siente cada vez más amplio y sereno. El proceso del papel recortado me ha hecho redescubrir mi conexión con la ciencia y la naturaleza, y encontrar alegría en la observación profunda.
